New service for library benefits families

Rotorua Library is offering people the chance to access a low-cost prepaid internet service.

Rotorua is part of a network called Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa (APNK) - a partnership between public libraries and The National Library of New Zealand, says a post on the Rotorua Lakes Council Facebook page.

"There's also a new library app that can help you access its digital offerings."

While technology has progressed over the years, there are still homes in Rotorua where there is no internet.

"The people in these homes are therefore excluded from the online interactions and services many of us may take for granted," says an article published by the Rotorua Lakes Council.

The partnership formed with the Rotorua Library helps to provide free access to broadband services at public libraries.

"Rotorua Library users also benefit fro a partnership with Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa. This provides digital inclusion programmes such as Spak Jump, which aims to help children learn online at home for $10 for 30GB."

The service is a prepaid internet for families with children under 18 who currently have no broadband connection.
