Designer takes fellow countryfolk on Treewalk

Walking among the trees in the Redwood Forest: Germany’s Deputy Speaker of the Bundestag Wolfgang Kubicki and his wife Annette Marberth-Kubicki

A German delegation have joined a growing list of illustrious visitors to the Redwoods Treewalk.

There have been some famous names strolling between the trees in the Redwood Forest, the most notable being Prince Harry and his wife Meghan who spent a day in Rotorua last year.

Recently, the Deputy Speaker of the German Parliament based in Bundestag, Wolfgang Kubicki, and the German Ambassador for New Zealand Stefan Krawielicki visited the Redwoods Treewalk.

Their party also comprised Wolfgang's wife Annette Marberth-Kubicki and Constantin Stellmach who is the Chief of Staff for Deputy-Speaker Kubicki.

Escorting the group was Treewalk inventor Alex Schmid, who, although originally from Germany, is now domiciled in Rotorua, and was involved in similar construction in Taupo until it was scuppered by the Taupo District Council last week.

Alex's guests spent 45 minutes walking above the forest terrain, seemingly appreciating the peaceful break from their busy schedule and tumult of politics.

The German delegation was interested in how their countryman had fallen for New Zealand, now contributing to the NZ tourism landscape by developing a 100 per cent New Zealand attraction.

At 700 metres long, Alex's treewalk comprises some 28 suspension bridges and 27 platforms. With the height averaging 9-20 metres in the trees, it is an ecological eye-opener.

The forest, opened to the public in the 1970s, now exceeds 600,000 visitors a year.

Alex's design has proved an instant success with Rotorua locals and internal and overseas tourists.

Although no longer involved with the Treewalk, Alex says he's delighted to see his concept of the Nightlights launched in 2017.

Currently the Redwoods Treewalk is one of the must-do activities in New Zealand. Recognised globally, Trip Advisor rates it as number 6 of 67 'things to do” in Rotorua.

Wolfgang and Annette called it 'a highlight of our visit to New Zealand.”

Alex says it is gratifying to see that someone, whose time is always in demand, could spend a few unmonitored moments immersed in a natural setting.

'We all know how therapeutic nature can be, and the Redwoods are ideal, particularly when viewed from the Treewalk, where you can look skyward toward the canopy and walk safely above a forest floor lushly lined with ferns,” says Alex.

The delegation was apprised of new entrepreneurial projects Alex has introduced to New Zealand and Australia. Ventures he has overseen or is in the process of overseeing include the High Ropes Course System from KristallTurm and an alternative zip line adventure Fly-Line.
