UPDATE: There are 47 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand and 14 new probable cases. This brings the total number of confirmed and probable cases to 708.

Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay has given an update on the cases this afternoon.

Caroline says there are 61 confirmed and probable cases since yesterday.

Number of confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in:

  • New Zealand: 708
  • Bay of Plenty: 18
  • Lakes: 11

These confirmed and probable numbers are updated on this page after the Ministry of Health daily public update (early-mid afternoon). See the Ministry of Health website for more information on COVID-19 cases in New Zealand.

Number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in:

  • Western Bay of Plenty: 15
  • Eastern Bay of Plenty: 1
  • Rotorua: 7
  • Taupō: 4

Caroline says 82 people have recovered from the virus.

"Fourteen people are in hospital. Two are in ICU and are stable.

"We are continuing to see a strong link to overseas travel and close contacts to those infected."

Caroline says about one per cent of the total cases is from community transmission.

"We are continuing to focus on getting better information on community transmission."

Caroline says a new case definition will be issued today as a guide for clinical practitioners.

It says those with respiratory illness consistent with COVID-19 should be considered for testing, regardless of travel history or contact with a confirmed case.

Labs for testing are increasing from eight to 10 and will be in place by the end of next week.

Civil Defence director Sarah Stuart-Black says 57 people were moved yesterday from managed isolation in Auckland through Wellington to Christchurch.

She says there will be a charted regional flight this afternoon, and more are expected in the next few days.

What we know so far

A total of 74 people have recovered from COVID-19 in New Zealand to date.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says there are a total of 48 new confirmed cases and 10 probable cases, bringing the total number of new confirmed and probable cases to 58 for today.

This brings the total numbers of cases in New Zealand to 647.

Ashley expects the numbers to continue to increase in the next seven to 10 days.

He hopes that number will start to decrease after that, if "people continue to do what they are being told".

There are 14 people in various hospitals around the country and two are in ICU.

"They are in a stable condition."

Ashley is asking people to continue to stay in isolation and help break the spread of COVID-19.

There are 15 probable confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Bay of Plenty.

This is the latest information from Toi Te Ora Public Health.

In a breakdown provided by the health organisation, there are a total of 647 probable and confirmed cases in New Zealand.

Of that total, there are 13 confirmed cases in the Western Bay, meaning there are two probable cases.

There is a total of 11 confirmed and probable cases in the Lakes area – seven confirmed in Rotorua, four in Taupo and zero in the Eastern Bay.

These are the most up-to-date numbers following yesterday's Ministry of Health media briefing.
