Politicians in lockdown: Fletcher Tabuteau

NZ First MP Fletcher Tabuteau, working from home

In the second of a series of more lighthearted interviews, Rotorua Now reporter Matthew Martin asks New Zealand First deputy leader and list MP based in Rotorua, Fletcher Tabuteau what he's doing while in his bubble.

Where are you in lockdown?

I'm at home here in Rotorua, at our home in Hamurana.

Who are you in lockdown with?

I'm home with my wife and two daughters.

Are you working from home? What are you doing?

I am indeed working from home. I am on the Covid-19 Response Select Committee. It's an opportunity to ensure democratic transparency so that the people of New Zealand know that in times of emergency we still make sure we hold ourselves to account.

How do you pass the time when not working?

Reading mostly. I pulled a handful of my old favourites off the bookshelf and yes, watching Youtube. I love the fail videos.

What advice would you give to people in lockdown?

Please follow the instructions. Self-isolation and the bubbles we have made are essential to maintain if we are to come out of lockdown anytime soon.

Do you have a message for people who are struggling with all of this?

Yes, please stay strong. Look to the future. We will come through this. History has shown us just how amazing New Zealand and its people are. We have an amazing government that is already working on what the other side of Covid-19 looks like. There are some amazing plans already underway.

What's the first thing you want to do when you come out of lockdown?

I hate to admit it, because we can cook a decent meal here at home, I do like treating myself to a burger from any, here unnamed, takeaway joints.
