SH30 now open following logging truck crash

Update: 5.10pm NZTA advise that State Highway 30 near Rotorua is now open following an earlier crash at the SH5 and SH30 roundabout.

Motorists are advised to expect delays as congestion eases in the area.

A fully laden logging truck left the road on the Hemo roundabout this morning and rolled, spilling logs. The driver was shaken but unhurt.

Update, 2.20pm: Due to a logging truck roll, SH30 is closed northbound between the SH5/SH30 roundabout and SH30/Fenton St roundabout.

A detour is in place.

SH30 Northbound traffic turn left onto SH5, right onto Devon St, right onto Fenton St and left to rejoin SH30 Northbound.

SH30 Southbound Traffic in reverse. SH5 Southbound traffic turn left onto Devon St, right onto Fenton St, continue straight onto SH30 for South.

Update, 10.45am: The driver of a fully laden logging truck that left the road on the Hemo roundabout is shaken but unhurt after a crash this morning.

Police, emergency services and contractors are onsite removing the logs from the truck that ploughed through barriers and ended up on its side about 8.30am today.

The road is now open to through traffic.

It is the second time since the roundabout - at the intersection of state highways 5 and 30 - was opened mid-2017 that a logging truck has left the road at the same spot.

The accident has caused substantial damage to one of the entrances to the roundabout commonly used by walkers and mountain-bikers to access the Whakarewarewa Forest.

The truck was travelling north toward the city when the accident happened. Police at the scene say an investigation into the accident is underway.

Earlier: 9am: A logging truck has rolled on the intersection of Hemo Rd (SH30) and Old Taupo Rd.

There are no reported injuries.

NZTA advise that due to the logging truck roll, SH30 northbound is now closed between SH5/SH30 roudabout and SH30/Fenton St roundabout.

A detour is in place.

Northbound motorists on SH30 are advised to take the first exit onto SH5, right onto Devon St, then left onto Fenton St.

Earlier, 8.25am:

Police are responding to a collision involving a truck on the intersection of Hemo Road (SH30) and Old Taupo Road.

There are no reported injuries.

Diversions will likely be in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
