With winter weather bringing sun, snow, rain, gales and showers, it's important to keep up with conditions as school holidays continue through this coming week.

The MetService advise that a low is expected to approach the North Island from the north Tasman Sea during Wednesday and Thursday, preceded by a strengthening easterly flow.

An associated front is expected to bring rain to the upper North Island through to Friday, along with strong to gale force easterly winds.

Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure remains over central and southern New Zealand.

There is moderate confidence of warning amounts of rain about Northland, especially the eastern hills from Wednesday to Thursday. There is low confidence of warning amounts of rain about northern parts of Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula on Thursday.

In addition, there is low confidence of severe easterly gales about exposed parts of Northland and northern Auckland during Thursday.
