Sunny with cloudy areas expected today

Sunny with cloudy areas and light winds appear to be the conditions for much of the country today as a moderate southwesterly airflow flows over New Zealand, says WeatherWatch analyst Aaron Wilkinson.

For the Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay Of Plenty regions, cloud is expected with sunny spells and possibly a shower during the morning. The temperature for these regions is expected to reach a high during the day of 13 to 15 degrees.

The Bay of Plenty will be mainly dry with longer sunny areas and southwesterly winds.

For the rest of the country, the WeatherWatch forecast is as follows:

Western North Island including Central North Island
Cloudy areas, chance of a shower about Taranaki. Light winds tend west to southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 8-14

Eastern North Island
Sunny, light winds.
Highs: 13-14

Wellington
Sunny, light northerlies.
High: 12

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny after a frosty start, light winds.
Highs: 12-14

Canterbury
Mostly sunny after a frosty start, a touch of high cloud. Light winds.
Highs: 11-13

West Coast
Mostly cloudy, showers for Fiordland, further north conditions are mainly dry but there may be a brief spit or shower at times. Winds are mostly light.
Highs: 8-12

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy for Southland, the odd spit or shower. For Otago expect cloudy areas for southern parts of the region, sunny skies further north with high cloud. West to northwesterly winds, breezy for coastal Southland.
Highs: 11-14
