Shepherd‘s delight in maiden first-class century

The game was played at the Bay Oval on Thursday.

Batting at nine for West Indies A, a breezy 133 off 154 balls from Romario Shepherd has steered West Indies A out of a pile of trouble and into a good position on day one of the first-class match with New Zealand A in Mount Maunganui.

Just days after his 26th birthday, Shepherd combined with Raymon Reifer in a 199-run stand for the eighth wicket that saw the West Indian side recover from 88/6 at lunch on Thursday.

After an action-packed start to the match, only one wicket would fall in the middle session as Reifer took on a late order anchorman role in support, the left-hander ploughing to his third half century for West Indies A.

The epic fightback alongside Shepherd was finally ended late on the topsy turvy day, paceman Jacob Duffy finishing with 4-47 after an afternoon of sweat and toil - after a bowl-first morning that had begun with NZ A captain Cole McConchie sending in West Indies A at a fresh Bay Oval and Doug Bracewell (2-62) striking with just his second delivery.

Duffy's Volts teammate Nathan Smith then grabbed two in an over and went on to 3-37, whilst wicketkeeper Dane Cleaver pouched four catches - including an assist from slip to dismiss Rovman Powell, and a heart-stopping running take to remove Josh da Silva off Scott Kuggeleijn.

New Zealand A opening pair Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips safely negotiated the three overs before stumps and will resume at 10 for no loss tomorrow, 312 runs behind West Indies A's first innings total of 322 all out in 82.1 overs.
