A fifth person has been arrested in relation to the death of a Bay of Plenty man.

Jamaine Wharton attended a 21st birthday party at the Waiohau Rugby Clubrooms on February 27, where he was assaulted and later stabbed.

The 31-year-old was taken to the Whakatane Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning where he tragically died, says Whakatane Area Investigations Manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson.

Earlier this month, police arrested two men aged 25 and 20 and a 16-year-old youth for allegedly assaulting Jamaine at the party.

They have been charged with assault with intent to injure and appeared in court on March 5.

Police have also arrested a 42-year-old woman for inciting the assault.

A fifth person, a 41-year-old man, was arrested on Thursday and is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He is scheduled to appear in Whakatāne District Court today.

'The investigation into Jamaine's murder is ongoing and Police would like to hear from anyone who has relevant information but has not yet spoken to us,” says Paul.
