5.3M quake hits near Whakatane

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake has hit the Bay of Plenty.

The quake hit at 7.15am, 25km west of Whakatane.

GeoNet reports it had a focal depth of 133km.

While the shaking has been described as "light", GeoNet says the quality of the quake is "best".

People as far as Wellington and Auckland have reported feeling the earthquake.

Newshub reports they Labour MP Rachel Boyack felt it in Nelson.
