Bomb scare at BOP school

Police at Western Heights High School.

A bomb scare has led to the evacuation at Western Heights School in Rotorua today.

Staff and pupils Year 9 and up were ordered from their rooms, says a reporter at the scene.

Emergency services rushed to the scene when the alarm was triggered.

"At 1.50pm, screams of police sirens and ambulance emergency vehicles were racing to the scene.

"Though bathed in sunshine, the evacuees who cannot find shelter are standing a stiff southerly breeze."

A post on the school's Facebook page is advising parents not to come down to the school.

"The school is currently in lockdown due to a bomb threat received by the police. All students and staff have been evacuated safely from the buildings.

"We are under the instructions of the police who request that parents do not come to the school as we cannot allow access at this time. We will post further updates. Thank you for your co-operation."

Rotorua Now sources say the mood is restless, but there are no signs of untoward activity.

Students and staff are huddled on the tennis courts.

The situation is otherwise orderly.

Police are interviewing heads of houses.

Bags are also being checked by the Police.
