A southwesterly airflow continues over New Zealand today bringing occasional showers in the west and south, dry and mostly sunny in the east, says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.

Bay of Plenty has a sunny day ahead with southwesterly winds and highs of 15-17 degrees Celsius.

For Northland, Auckland and Waikato the weather is expected to be partly cloudy, with a few showers for western Northland then spreading to other western areas from afternoon and southwesterly winds. Highs of between 15-17 degrees are expected.

Western North Island including Central North Island
Partly cloudy skies, the odd shower moves into Taranaki during the morning. A frosty start about the Central Plateau, cloud from afternoon. West to southwesterly winds.

Eastern North Island
Mainly sunny, some cloud for Wairarapa from afternoon. Light WNW winds.
Highs: 15-18

Wellington
Mostly sunny, some cloud at times. Northerlies may tend to the south late afternoon.
Highs: 14-16

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny, a frosty start especially inland. South to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-17

Canterbury
Sunny with light winds, a frosty start especially inland.
Highs: 10-16

West Coast
Cloudy areas with the odd shower, mainly right along the coastal fringe. Drying out for South Westland towards midday with sun breaking through. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 12-16

Southland and Otago
Showers about Southland. Otago has a sunny morning with frosty conditions to start inland, some cloud at times from afternoon, a few showers move into coastal Otago. Westerlies, brisk to strong about the coast from afternoon.
