Thickening cloud and showers ahead

WeatherWatch is forecasting a southwesterly airflow continuing over the country today with a mainly sunny day for the Bay of Plenty.

"But there is a slightly more southerly kink to the flow about to move through this afternoon bringing thickening cloud and showers into eastern regions," says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.

Northland, Auckland, and Waikato has a partly cloudy day ahead with occasional showers and southwesterly winds. Highs for the regions including Bay of Plenty will be between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius.

Western North Island including central North Island
Partly cloudy, the odd shower, westerlies change southeast in the evening.
Highs: 11-17

Eastern North Island
Mainly sunny, light winds change to the southwest in the afternoon with cloud gradually increasing. Late afternoon showers move into Wairarapa then further north in the evening.
Highs: 17-19

Wellington
Mostly sunny, southerlies freshen from afternoon with cloud increasing, showers develop evening.
Highs: 16-17

Marlborough and Nelson
Sunny then showers develop late afternoon or evening as southeasterlies freshen. A few snow flurries to 700m overnight for Marlborough.
Highs: 15-17

Canterbury
Sunny then cloud starts to increase from late morning as southwesterlies freshen, late afternoon or evening showers with a few light snow flurries lowering to 400m overnight. Parts of South Canterbury especially inland stay mainly dry.
Highs: 11-16

West Coast
Occasional showers, clearing in the morning for South Westland with sun increasing, showers ease from afternoon further north then clearing evening. Southwesterlies tend easterly later on.
Highs: 12-15

Southland and Otago
Occasional showers for Southland and coastal Otago, a few light snow flurries lowering down to 400m, clearing around midnight. Central Otago is drier but a few showers still move through in the afternoon. Fresh to strong southwesterly winds ease later in the day.
Highs: 11-13
