The large mud pool which appeared in Rotorua on Tuesday morning is now getting bigger.

Rotorua Lakes Council is reporting that more ground has collapsed at Meade Street in Whakarewarewa, since yesterday.

The geothermal activity at the end of the cul-de-sac had reached to just under foundations of the garage on the 12 Meade St property occupied by the Gedye family, who have moved out.

Steam is also venting from the bank moving towards the house.

The council says there have been events along the bank where this has occurred in recent years.

Although in the past steam vents have eventually stopped, this time with the mud pool forming is a 'bit different”.

Yesterday's press conference on Meade Street.

GNS and RLC are continuing to monitor the situation and council's role is around public safety.

Council is in contact with the property owner to support them regarding safety requirements.

Meanwhile, the public are still being warned to stay well clear of the geothermal activity that has emerged on Meade Street in Whakarewarewa.
