Police have charged a 37-year-old man with murder following the death of a two-year-old girl in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Nevaeh Jahkaya Whatukura Ager's body was discovered on the tidal flats of Little Waihi on March 21.

At the time, police say they attended reports of a disorder in the area at around 10.40am and later discovered the little girl's body.

In a statement released today, police say they have charged a man with murder.

'This was a tragic incident and we would like to thank members of the public for their assistance and cooperation during the course of this investigation,” says Detective Sergeant Louise Curragh.

'As the matter is now before the court Police will be making no further comment.”

The accused will be appearing in Tauranga District Court tomorrow.
