Bay of Plenty residents are being told to watch out for heavy rain later today.

The MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for the region.

There is also heavy rain and strong winds forecast for parts of the South Island.

'An active front moves onto the country from the Tasman Sea today, preceded by a strong and moist north to northeast flow, then followed by disturbed west to northwesterlies.

'This front delivers a period of heavy rain to the west of the South Island, including spillover rain into the Canterbury and Otago headwaters,” says the weather organisation.

'This front also brings a brief period of heavy rain to parts of the upper North Island, with the heaviest falls expected in Bay of Plenty where a heavy rain watch is now in force.”

In addition, north to northwest gales are expected in parts of the South Island.

'People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any updates are made, or additional areas are added.”
