Tourism player joins cancer fundraiser

Blue lights for treeline.

What has bark, a broad base, a green canopy and carries hundreds of visitors a day within a fenced maze – and pitches in for charity?

Rotorua Treeline, one of the district's popular and recently established attractions through which all winds whisper with a growing international reputation, is gone blue for September.

Though it has had a charitable base, the business has added Blue September to its cause.

It has joined the Prostate Cancer Foundation to assist in raising funds for its Blue September month.

To illustrate the point, a photograph highlights a lighted blue area in this green belt area of Rotorua.

'We're going blue for Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand Blue September,” Rotorua Treeline says on its Facebook page

'Throughout the whole of September, [a] platform will be illuminated in different shades of blue to show our support,” the message reads.

But Graeme Woodside, CEO of the foundation, says he's pleased the Rotorua Treeline's FB page had a number of 'very positive comments”.

The support for prostate cancer was initiated by a Rotorua Lakes Council employee, Phil Hunt, several years ago.

Phil, who has since died, arranged blue-lit themes on sides of buildings in Rotorua to help highlight Blue September.

'The council and several others carried that on, so it's a bit of a tradition in Rotorua to light things up blue down there,” Graeme says.

The treeline company has initiated its own support and had seen some of the effects of the buildings and areas in the gardens and reserve areas such as the Bath House.

'It's all good with people assisting us promoting Blue September and it's really appreciated,” Graeme says.

Overall, the Blue September campaign is growing.

One notable blue spot was the Castlepoint Lighthouse in the Wairarapa district.

At Christchurch Airport the motorway overpass has blue arches this year.

'The whole campaign is getting more momentum.”

Bertram Jehly, of the Rotorua foundation, says the local branch will set up a stall at the weekly Kuirau Park market, though he was unsure of a consecutive weekend.

'We would like to have one the following week, too, but that depends on the weather,” Bertram says.

Treeline Rotorua has been contacted for comment.
