A man has been stabbed in the chest near a motel in Rotorua.

Police and ambulance arrived at the Ace Motor Lodge, on the corner of Sumner and Fenton St, around 12.05pm on Sunday where the victim was treated and taken to Rotorua Hospital.

The man received a single, two centimetre puncture wound, but it is still unknown what tool was used, Bay of Plenty Senior Sargent Herby Ngawhika said.

"The victim and the offender are known to each other. The offender is known [to police] but still to be located."

A witness heard the man say "please help me" as he ran away from his attacker and towards the lodge, manager Yuri Yu said.

"He tried to get to the office to ask for help but he didn't make it. He fell down on the street."

Yu and a guest called 111 for the man, and Yu attempted to video the attacker who fled the scene.

"The wound was bleeding very badly ... there was a lot of blood, it was all over his pants and on the street.

"He didn't says a word about it so I don't know the reason it happened."

Yu said he's shocked and nervous for his guests.

"I've never seen anything like this ... there was a guy bleeding and sitting in front of the door.

"I'm a little bit worried about the security of our customers ... at least the guy is alive."
