Check on health of teeth in Rotorua

Teething problems: Juanito Restrepo, Teemarangi Daniela and Dr Hayden McRobbie outside the Rotorua Public Library on Saturday.

A mobile community health vehicle set up on Saturday had few teething problems.

Yet, it was parked adjacent the community area of Rotorua Library for that reason.

The unit has been set up by Lakes DHB to inspect dental health of the young, ages ranging from 0 to 18, one medical professional said.

The beauty of the service is that those who oversee the inspection are medical professionals volunteering their time each week.

Te Aka Mauri (library) was their first stop.

Each week, other venues in the community will be chosen.

Dr Hayden McRobbie says the plan is 'to keep moving”.

'We intend moving around the district, like Kuirau Park – no appointments are necessary,” says Hayden.

Accompanying Hayden on Saturday were Juanito Restrepo, of Columbia, who within the last year has settled in Rotorua, and Teemarangi Daniels, of administration support.

Though a low-key start on a slate grey Rotorua Saturday morning, the hospital crew say the response was encouraging.

'We've had children from 15 months to a seven-year-old coming in,” Hayden says.

When Rotorua Now called by, the interest had come from eight people.

This is not the first time Lakes DHB has reached out to the community for health improvement purposes. 'We've been here before for others,” says Juanito.

A fluoride varnish information was furnished to explain the effects of fluoride varnish, a dental treatment to reduce cavities in children's teeth and repair early stages of tooth decay before decay is visible.

Such remedy is considered a safe treatment in tooth decay prevention.
