Police are appealing for any information after the body of a 29-year-old man was discovered on a boat in the Tauranga Harbour on Saturday.

Police have not released the Tauranga man's name but say his body was found on a small motorboat which ran aground on the Pilot Quay shore.

As they investigate the man's death, police would like to speak to anyone who was on a boat in or out of Tauranga between midnight on Friday, October 4, and 8am on Saturday, October 5, says a police spokesperson.

"We would also like to speak to people fishing in the harbour entrance or walking around the Mauao base track during the same period.

"We would like to hear from anyone who has not yet spoken to us, who may have information regarding the death."

People with information can contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Non-emergency information can be phoned into the police's 105 number.
