State Highway 2 is open following a serious crash in the Bay of Plenty,
Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash near Matata around 6.30pm.
A St John spokesperson says the crash was near Thornton Road.
"Two ambulances and a helicopter were sent. One person was critically injured."
A police spokesperson says two vehicle were involved in the crash.
The road was closed to allow the serious crash unit to examine the scene.
It was re-opened around 11pm.
"Police thank motorists for their patience," says a police spokesperson.
"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."
