UPDATED: 5.15pm Police are responding to a serious crash between a car and a truck on State Highway 30.

The crash occurred near the Hinehopu Golf Club about 4.10pm, says a statement from police.

SH30 is closed losed near Te Puakanga Road in Rotoiti, between Tikitere and Rotoma.

The road is expected to be closed for some time and diversions are in place, says the statement.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising people to avoid the area if possible or be prepared for a detour.

A detour is in place via State Highway 33, State Highway 2 and State Highway 34 for eastbound traffic.

Westbound traffic should use the same route in reverse. This route is suitable for heavy vehicles.

Waka Kotahi says delays are possible and people should follow the directions of emergency services.
