Cycleway under review not closure

The cyway through the Rotorua CBD is not going to close but improvements related to safety would be revised.

At a full Rotorua Lakes Council meeting on Wednesday, Mayor Steve Chadwick says the cycleway had been a 'stunning success” in her view.

But the 2kms through town was subject to a report the council called two months ago.

The report would not be immediately available though she said she hoped it would be available in the present term.

Councillor Charles Sturt says in view of public comment 'swirling around” he thought it appropriate the review of the CBD should include the demobilisation of the cycling network.

Tagged the Cyway, the route begins in Lake Road through Kuirau Park, winding through the CBD towards the Sanitorium Reserve and continues to Puarenga Stream before forking to Whakarewarewa and Longmile Road, the western fringe of the Redwood Forest.

'There are still people who use the Green Corridor, contrary to myth. It (lack of use) is a load of rubbish,” says Charles.

To prove his point, Sturt took a count of the number of cyclists over a recent weekend.

Council officer Stavros Michael said safety was obviously one of the fundamental requirements for the protection of motorists and cyclists through the CBD.

To a question from Councillor Rob Kent, Steve says at the time the review was called for, it was clear that review involved parking.

Councillor Tania Tapsell says the green corridor had served its purpose in regards over safety transport.

Steve says no one had said 'most of the function has centred on the 2kms, but it's been a stunning success”.

'No one has said it is going,” she says. 'We've called for a review of its functionality – we've called for a review. We must correct the record. It is misinformation and it's generating some wrong assumptions.”

Further, the report was a 'review of functionality”.

Councillors were not given a date when a report would become available.

Steve says the review was 'quite extensive”

Stavros Michael says that on May 8 the public could attend an open forum after which a proposed timeframe could be made.
