Today marks an important date in the calendar of keen trout fishers around the region.

Several Eastern Region streams, which have remained closed because of late spawning, will open to fishing.

Fish & Game urges anglers to make the most of the opening date, get amongst the action and have some fun.

The upper sections of the Ngongotaha, Waiteti and Utuhina Streams at Rotorua and the Hopuruahine and Mokau Streams at Waikaremoana all open to fishing on Thursday, December 1.

The North Island has been hit hard by rain for an extended period over spring so Fish & Game suggests anglers check river levels before venturing out.

Discoloured water can be countered by using different methods for the opening, says Fish & Game's Mark Sherburn.

'Larger wet flies fished in the margins will produce results in even the dirtiest of water and larger, brighter Glo bugs will pull fish from areas often considered unfishable”

Fish & Game wants to remind anglers to Check, Clean and Dry their equipment between waterways to prevent the spread of aquatic pests.

Ranging teams will be out talking with anglers and ask that they carry their licences at all times when fishing.
