A thee-day ban or rāhui has been put in place on the waters at the Huka Falls following a death there, says a Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board spokesperson.
"As of 9.30am Friday 30 December, there is a three day rāhui on the waters at Te Tāhekeheke Hukahuka (Huka Falls)," says the post by board on Facebook.
"An incident occurred there which resulted in a death."
The affected area is from Huka Falls to Te Toka a Tia which is approximately 70m away from the falls.
The rāhui ceremonies were performed by a Hikuwai hapū delegation on Friday morning.
"The Department of Conservation tracks remain open, however the local hapū request that people be careful and respectful," says a Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board spokesperson.
"Furthermore the public is advised to stay out of [the] water.
The Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board are requesting the rāhui be respected until it is lifted on Monday January 2 2023.
