Fieldays gates are open and people have started pouring in this morning despite heavy traffic congestion around the region.

For visitors heading to the four-day event this week, Fieldays has issued a checklist of things people can do before they arrive, and at the gate to make the day out as seamless as possible.

"Check the latest traffic updates before you start your drive to Fieldays, it's going to be busy out there so it's a good idea to be prepared," says a Fieldays spokesperson.

Head to Waka Kotahi NZTA . Consider catching a free bus to Fieldays.

Fieldays traffic congestion

Waka Kotahi NZTA report that SH5 between Tirau and Rotorua is closed due to a serious crash.

"State Highway 5 is closed between SH28 (Harwoods Rd), Ngatira and Maraeroa Rd, Hamurana,' says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

"Delay your journey or consider using alternative route: http://spr.ly/6180OFh8i using SH29 and SH36 via Tauranga.

"Due to existing roadworks travel south of Rotorua via SH30 Horohoro/Atiamuri is not recommended."
