More ground has collapsed around the mud pool which burst to life in Rotorua on Tuesday morning.

GNS scientist Brad Scott and Rotorua Lakes Council geothermal inspector Peter Brownbridge have been monitoring the fumerole at Meade Street.

At a press conference on Thursday, the pair say it will be around for a while.

'When we first came down here, the thing was erupting … at a 45 degree angle. You could see cavity was being created and there were cracks at the top of the cliff; that area has now subsided and the feature's moved along to the south,” says Peter.

The area of activity is constrained to around 15-20 metres from the point of the fumarole.

In an update today, Rotorua Lakes Council says 'today the situation remains similar to yesterday”.

'There has been slightly more ground collapse on the property. Council is working with the owner to further secure the property.

'Matters relating to the property ie, whether or not the shed and/or house will be demolished will need to be referred to the property owner.

'Council's role in this event is to ensure public safety and we cannot comment on decisions relating to private property.”
