UPDATED: One person has died following a 'major' crash on State Highway 2.

Emergency services received reports that a truck and car had collided around 1.50pm near Hauone and Pikowai Roads on the Matata Straights.

"One person has died at the scene.

"Initial infromation suggests other people may be injured."

Diversions are currently being put in place.

NZTA are advising motorists that the road is closed.

Detour route: Northbound from Edgecumbe: Turn left onto SH34, turn right onto SH30, turn right onto SH33, continue onto SH2. Southbound in reverse from Paengaroa.

It is unknown at this stage when the road will be reopened.

A "major" truck crash is being reported on State Highway 2, in the Bay of Plenty.

A SunLive reader has messaged us on Facebook to say there is a "pretty major truck crash on the Matata Straights".

"The road is partially blocked."

The crash is reported to be near Murphy's Motor Camp, near Pikowai.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area or use an alternative route.
