MetService issues severe weather warning

Update, 11am: Heavy rain watches are in force for Northland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Mount Taranaki and northwest Tasman.

"An active trough is expected to move over the country during the weekend bringing heavy rain to northern and western regions," says a MetService spokesperson.

Earlier, 10am: MetService has issued a severe weather warning, as an active trough moves eastwards across central and northern New Zealand today, bringing heavy rain and showers. 

Heavy rain is expected for northern and western parts of the country.

A Heavy Rain Warning has been issued for Bay of Plenty east of Kawerau, and Gisborne/Tairawhiti north of Ruatoria. This is valid for 16 hours from 8am today, Sunday June 23 to 12am Monday, June 24.

"Expect 80 to 120 mm of rain, with peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h, or possibly more in thunderstorms and downpours," says a MetService spokesperson.

Streams and rivers may rise rapidly, and surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible today.

"Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously."

A Heavy Rain Watch is in place for Coromandel Peninsula, which is valid until 4pm, today, Sunday, June 23.

A Heavy Rain Warning has also been issued for Tasman about and northwest of Motueka and is valid until noon today, Sunday, June 23.

A Heavy Rain Watch is also in place for Taranaki north and east of Stratford, and is also valid until noon today, with thunderstorms and downpours possible.

Watches no longer in Force 
The Heavy Rain Watch has been lifted for Northland north of Whangarei.

"Rain is easing, and the watch has been lifted."

The Heavy Rain Watch has also been lifted for Waikato and Waitomo.

"While further heavy showers are possible, especially about the coast, widespread rain has eased, and the watch has been lifted."

Heavy Rain Warning lifted for Mount Taranaki/Taranaki Mounga: Heavy rain has eased, and the warning has been lifted.
